WSJWC December Holiday SocialOn Tuesday, December 9 the Winston-Salem JWC hosted a Holiday Social in place of our regularly scheduled meeting. We had guest from the Greensboro JWC and our GFWC-NC District 4 Director of Juniors join us, as well as a few perspective members. Fun was had by all, as we all sipped on festive drinks, eat wonderful meals, and played a quick round on Sneaky Santa. There were some really cute ornaments traded around the table. A couple were even traded around the table more than once before finding permanent homes. I am sure they all made it to trees for this holiday season, I know mine did... Thanks again to all the attendees for making this holiday social a great event!
2008 Snacks with SantaOn Sunday, December 7 the Winston-Salem JWC, along with perspective member Megan Kinney, attended the 2008 Snacks with Santa event held at the Gateway YWCA. This was a new free holiday event for children and families in our area. Imprints and the Work Family Resource Center sponsored this special event entitled, Snacks with Santa: A Celebration of Holiday Traditions, identifying how various cultures celebrate this special time of year. The event was for all families in Forsyth County with young children. The admission was a canned good item which was donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness about Imprints, Work Family Resource Center and other agencies in Forsyth County that serve young children and their families, all within an enjoyable and creative format. The WSJWC, along with other non-profit organizations, sponsored crafts and games. We had a great time playing "Bowling Snowman" during this fun and educational experience exposing young children and their families to a variety of holiday traditions. In addition, children had the opportunity to visit with Santa as well. Crafts, games and entertainment highlighting Hanukkah, Kwanza, Asian, Hispanic, Muslim and American traditions are planned. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for children and their parents to work together on a craft or play a game specific to a group’s own holiday traditions. To learn more about these organizations, visit their websites at www.ywcaws.org/gateway.html (for the YWCA), and www.imprintsforfamilies.org (for Imprints). Note: The Work Family Resource Center site is currently under construction.
2008 Mistletoe RunOn Saturday, December 6 the Winston-Salem JWC took to the streets of the Winston-Salem. In an effort to do our part to help GOTR complete their final task of running in a 5k race, we volunteered to help the YMCA of Northwest NC by manning an intersection. We held sign pointing the runners in the right direction and cheering on everyone as the raced to the finish on this rather chilly morning. As you can see by the pictures we had a great time, and the girls ran a great race. Thank you to the police officers who manned the intersection with us... and put up with Jennifer's annoying cow bell (A cheering trick learned from the Ramblin' Rose)!!!
WSJWC November Club MeetingOn Tuesday, November 11, Paula Evans from Girls on the Run stopped by to speak with us about the program. Paula is the Counsel Director of Forsyth County. Molly Barker is the founder and Vision Keeper of GOTR. She wanted to find a way to improve self and healthy choice for young girls. The program focuses on girls in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade girls. It’s ok to be who you are, you don’t have to go to the “girl box” because you look a certain way or act a certain way. The program teaches life’s lessons in 24 sessions. They start with warm ups, sprinting session, running session, and finish with a cool down. Each lesson has a focal point that all 4 sessions revolve around. It prepares the body to run, prepares their spirit, and begins the preparation/clarification of values. The Forsyth County office located at Forsyth Medical Center. The program came to Forsyth County in Oct 2005 when they held a training session. The first pilot program took place in the spring of 2006. It started with 13 girls, and in Spring 2009 they estimate having 160+ girls. The fee is $150 for the 24 sessions with trained coaches and the entry fee for the run at the end of the sessions. 25% of students are scholarships. Each site can have 15 girls, and there are currently 11 sites. We were able to donate items to the Forsyth County Program, which included balls, construction paper, colored pencils, markers, stickers, and lots, lots more. If you would like to find out more information on GOTR, please visit their website http://www.gotrforsythnc.org/ We also collected shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child to be donated to Samaritan's Purse. GFWC-NC Family Fun DayGFWC-NC Family Fun Day was held on August 23rd at the NC Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC. The Federation toured the museum, took a train ride throughout the train yard, and enjoyed a presentation by Jenny Biser on the contributions of GFWC-NC during WWII. Our State Federation raised enough money to purchase various equipment for the men protecting our nation, including a fighter plane, which was flown by one of North Carolina’s own men.
